Waitangi Day is a powerful reminder of who we are as Māori and as a nation. It is a day to reflect on the promises made under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to celebrate the enduring strength of our culture, our people, and our connection to this land.
This year, the Treaty Principles Bill has ignited a spark within our communities. While it raises important challenges, it has also brought Māori together in a way that showcases our unity, resilience, and commitment to protecting what is rightfully ours.
Hikoi: Walking Together in Unity
The recent hikoi from Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) to the steps of Parliament in Wellington was a breathtaking display of kotahitanga (unity). Māori from all walks of life came together in peaceful solidarity, walking side by side to amplify our voices and ensure our rights under Te Tiriti are upheld.
What’s more, the spirit of the hikoi extended beyond Aotearoa. Māori communities across the world organised their own marches, standing proudly in support of our whānau back home. This global show of solidarity is a testament to the strength of our whakapapa, reminding us that no matter where we are, we are united as tangata whenua.
What Waitangi Day Means
Waitangi Day is a time to reflect on our journey as a people. Te Tiriti o Waitangi was a partnership founded on respect, protection, and shared prosperity. For Māori, it represents our connection to our whenua, our mana, and our right to thrive as the indigenous people of Aotearoa.
In celebrating Waitangi, we honour our tīpuna who fought to protect these rights, and we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring they are upheld for future generations.
Strength in Solidarity
The Treaty Principles Bill has sparked important conversations about the value of te ao Māori in Aotearoa. While some may see these discussions as challenging, they are also an opportunity to educate, connect, and strengthen our collective identity.
The hikoi and the solidarity it inspired show that Māori are not alone in this journey. Allies from all corners of society are standing with us, recognising the importance of a bicultural future where Te Tiriti is honoured, and where Māori and non-Māori can thrive together.
Proud to Be Māori
Waitangi Day is a celebration of who we are. It’s a day to feel proud of our culture, our language, and our traditions. It’s a reminder that being Māori is a gift, and that our connection to this land and its history is something to be cherished and protected.
As we stand together - whether on a hikoi, in kōrero, or in everyday acts of resilience - we are building a future where Māori culture is not just seen but celebrated, where Te Tiriti is not just a document but a living agreement, and where we can all move forward with aroha and respect.
Meri Waitangi! Let’s honour this day with pride, unity, and a commitment to the shared future of Aotearoa.
Ngā mihi nui,
Kelly
