At Mātātuhi Designs, our logo is more than just a brand symbol—it carries deep cultural significance and reflects the very essence of who we are. The design is simple yet powerful, incorporating a white feather—the Parihaka raukura—set against a black background. Each element of the logo holds a meaning that resonates with our values and mission as a business, rooted in Māori culture and history.
The feather represents the Parihaka raukura, a symbol of peace and resistance. The Parihaka settlement, led by the great Māori leaders Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi, became known for its peaceful resistance to colonial forces in the late 19th century. Those who followed this movement wore the white raukura feather in their hair, a gesture that conveyed their commitment to non-violence and unity. By incorporating this feather into our logo, we honour this legacy and carry forward its message of peace, resilience, and standing strong in the face of challenges.
The choice of a white feather on a black background is intentional. White represents the purity of the raukura and the values it stands for. Against a black background, the feather stands out, symbolising the strength and clarity of our purpose. In Māori culture, black is often seen as a colour of potential and new beginnings, aligning with our mission to bring Māori culture and design to the forefront in a positive and empowering way.
The name Mātātuhi itself adds another layer of meaning to our logo. Derived from te reo Māori, it translates to “to imprint, print, or design.” It reflects our passion for creating unique, meaningful designs that are deeply connected to our culture. Whether through apparel, art, or other products, our goal is to imprint the richness of Māori heritage on the world, leaving a lasting impression.
Together, the feather and the name Mātātuhi embody our mission to promote te ao Māori in a way that is both respectful and inspiring. Every design we create is a reflection of the pride we have in our roots and our hope to share that with others—whether you are Māori or someone who simply appreciates and respects the beauty of this culture.
